My dressform

Over the last year and a half, and most recently, yesterday, I’ve been asked about my dressform.  This post may sound like an advertisement, but it’s not.  I’m just a very loyal customer of the Uniquely You dressform, which costs $139 at http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp03900.html.  Since I’ve gone up and down dramatically in size, I’m lucky enough to have enough forms to show you what she looks like covered and nekkid.  When she first arrives at your house, she is a vaguely lady-shaped foam block with breasts.  The form on the left is the nekkid foam.  She also comes with a lovely tan or pink twill cover.  The fitting procedure does require help from someone you are quite familar with.  You put the twill cover on, inside out, and pin the seams snuggly or mark where you need to let them out.  You then sew on the new pinned seams.  Here comes the fun part.  The cover then gets zipped onto the foam block.  This is a MAJOR struggle, usually requiring the form to be put on the floor and me standing on the back, holding the edges together while another person zips the zipper.  If she needs padding out, you add the cotton while you are zipping.  In the end, you have a form that is almost exactly you, with your pouchy tummy, swayback, one shoulder higher than the other, long waist, short waist, whatever.  The foam blocks come in 4 sizes, from 29in bust to 51in bust and each block has 3 cover size options.  If you loose or gain 10-20lbs, you can get a new cover and refit the foam block, instead of having to buy a whole new system.  Looking at my form, I realize that I should probably refit the cover.  I know her tummy needs some more padding out.  I hope you’ve enjoyed the look at the Uniquely You.

That’s terrific. I just got a Fabulous Fit (I’m waiting for it to be delivered) but this also sounds like an excellent system. And more affordable!

I’d love to have something like this! Mine is one of the adjustible plastic numbers and I don’t like/use it. Someday maybe…

I have this dress form. Actually I am on my 2nd one. One from my late 30’s and the newest one from my 60″s. I am waiting for the call from the dressmaker to say the shell is done. It makes life so much easier.
Getting the CB to Bust point right has been an issue.
the only complant I have is the arm nubs. I had to wack them off.

I am all over that when we re-do our den into a sewing/work/exercise room!

Thanks for the demo. This seems like a great concept. Could you sew your own cover in an altered size or is it important to buy theirs?

The form comes with one cover included in the price. I’ve never sewn my own cover, but I’m sure you could.

It would be interesting to try. A few years ago I started working Lynda Maynard’s method from DeMystifying Fit. It starts with a fitted sloper that you then use to make pattern alterations. I could see sewing the sloper and, once perfected, using it to fit over the form. I have one of the adjustable dress forms and I love. I’m going to keep yours in mind if I ever buy another one.

Oh I might need a new dressform. I have an adjustable one and don’t love it. Thanks for sharing. g

ooo- this seems very interesting… thanks for the tip!

This sounds so so much better than the t-shirt/tape method. Especially since we have no patience and cut it off before it was dry enough.
